n.  sadness that you’ll never be able to know how history will turn out, that you’ll dutifully pass on the joke being alive without ever learning the punch line. 

Napoleon sits under house arrest imagining the downfall of is European empire. Although aware he is in the final chapter of his life's story, Bonaparte and those who surround him know the end is still unwritten and time will ultimately pass judge them all.
